Schottel, Henry
1848 - 1828-
Name Schottel, Henry - Janet Snowdon, July 2009: I was able to talk a while with Quinton Schottel. He told me his grandfather, Henry (son of Conrad and Louise Schottel) could remember coming to America on the ship when he was 6 years old. He was born in 1848, so that would be the trip the same year as was recorded in the Journeyman's Book that Johann Vennekohl had.
- The German Church Southeast of Cosby Missouri and the Schottel Family History
Conrad H. Schottel - Born December 9, 1816, died April 14, 1903.
Louise H. Schottel - Born June 16, 1816, died November 13, 1890.
were the Parents of Henry Schottel.
The Conrad Schottel family and the Henry Theis family came from Germany. They arrived in Connecticut in the year of 1842 and proceeded westward to Southwestern Wisconsin. They resided there until about 1856. The Schottel family arrived in Missouri at the Theis family's arrival and located one mile' east of the German church on a farm presently owned by Mr. and Mrs. James Shewmaker in the Blauchamp school district.
They were parents of nine chudren and also reared one Granddaughter. She cared for her Grandmother in her last illness. Mr. Schottel's main trade was a wagon maker. The family raised crops and livestock, and had an orchard and a large vineyard. They attended the German Church. Conrad Schottel, Phillip Maag, and William Garbe were three of the first trustees and officers in the church from 1869 until 1874.
Conrad, Louise and Frank Schottel, Georqe, Mathew and Matilda Schreuk, William and Louise Garbe, Phillip, Anna and John Maag were on the first membership roll recorded in 1882.
Among the first Sunday School scholars on April 23, 1871 were William, Frank and Matilda Schottel and Christian Stoll. Frank Schottel taught the children Sunday school dass in the 1890's. He taught German rather than the usual Sunday curriculum, because the children were beginning to lose their German language in their English taught school.
The land for the German church and the land for the cemetery was donated by the Henry Theis family and their daughter and her husband-- the William Krull family. The german church also known as the Zion Evangelical merged in 1946 with the United Brethren church. In 1968 the E.U.B. merged with the Methodist church and Faith churches became known as the Cosby parish.
The first burial in the German Church cemetery was a baby girl. She was the daughter of William and Hannah E. Krull. Name: Mary E. Krull, died on February 4, 1869 (8 months and 20 days old). The marker reads this is the first grave placed in this cemetery and it is placed in the north west corner of the cemetery.
Henry Schottel, son of Conrad and Louise Schottel, married Sarah Simmons. They had two children: William R. Schottel - Born December 25, 1874, died August 14, 1966 and Nellie (Lunnie Lee) Schottel - Born October 2, 1876, died 1952. Sarah passed away (December 10, 1876, at the age of 18 years, 2 months and 7 days) and Henry married Louise Krull. (Source: Quinton Schottel 2009)
